City lead, but stumbled
Manchester City have won seven of their nine games, but recently lost 1-0 to Brighton. They are ahead of Arsenal on goal difference alone. If Arsenal win their game in hand, they will go clear at the top.
Brighton, the surprise package
Brighton have the best goal difference in the league (+17) and sit just two points off the top. Their win over City showed the south-coast side can challenge for the Champions League places.
Liverpool and Chelsea chasing
Liverpool, 5th with a game in hand, still have room to close the gap. In the Champions League, the Reds showed their strength by beating Villarreal 4-3. Chelsea are 4th on 16 points.
The newly promoted sides
Among the newly promoted teams, Hull City and Ipswich Town have made solid starts and sit around mid-table.
